Much Ado About Nothing

A Tiny Fruit That Tricks the Tongue

June 24, 2009 · 1 Comment

Miracle Fruit! It’s a Miracle! :)
Here’s a wonderful article from the NY Times that describes what these berries are all about.
Let me first preface this article by saying that it really works! I wouldn’t say that it changes things to an “extreme” (for example icecream won’t taste like pizza) but it definitely turns sour items into sweet and brings out unusual flavors in bitter foods.
So we had to order them! When they arrived we kept them in our fridge (because they have to stay cool) until we were ready to experiment.
Chris and I had a party recently to try out an array of foods. The fruit doesn’t taste great when you keep it in your mouth but it’s nto bad either. It’s just.. weird.  Our kitchen counter was sprinkled with a variety of the most random foods and sour fruits. It was quite amusing to watch us walk around the kitchen eating a lemon like it was an apple and we didn’t even wince! ;)
These little berries are said to help patients who have lost enjoyment in foods due to medication and lost sense of taste. They help to heighten flavors in certain foods. These are fun to try but be careful..although a grapefruit might taste like sweet candy, when mixing with random things like chocolate milk, beer, and hot sauce, I’m not sure how great you’ll feel the next day..

RADISH, WHERE IS THY STING? At flavor-tripping parties, guests find that miracle fruit makes everything sweet.

CARRIE DASHOW dropped a large dollop of lemon sorbet into a glass of Guinness, stirred, drank and proclaimed that it tasted like a “chocolate shake.”

HOW’S IT DO THAT? Franz Aliquo, who calls himself Supreme Commander, right, supplied miracle berries grown by Curtis Mozie, left, to party-goers in Long Island City, Queens, last weekend.

Joe Fornabaio for The New York Times

Those who attended sampled the red berries then tasted foods, including cheese, beer and brussels sprouts, finding the flavors transformed. Beer can taste like chocolate, lemons like candy. Mr. Aliquo says he holds the parties to “turn on a bunch of people’s taste buds.”

Nearby, Yuka Yoneda tilted her head back as her boyfriend, Albert Yuen, drizzled Tabasco sauce onto her tongue. She swallowed and considered the flavor: “Doughnut glaze, hot doughnut glaze!”

They were among 40 or so people who were tasting under the influence of a small red berry called miracle fruit at a rooftop party in Long Island City, Queens, last Friday night. The berry rewires the way the palate perceives sour flavors for an hour or so, rendering lemons as sweet as candy.

The host was Franz Aliquo, 32, a lawyer who styles himself Supreme Commander (Supreme for short) when he’s presiding over what he calls “flavor tripping parties.” Mr. Aliquo greeted new arrivals and took their $15 entrance fees. In return, he handed each one a single berry from his jacket pocket.

“You pop it in your mouth and scrape the pulp off the seed, swirl it around and hold it in your mouth for about a minute,” he said. “Then you’re ready to go.” He ushered his guests to a table piled with citrus wedges, cheeses, Brussels sprouts, mustard, vinegars, pickles, dark beers, strawberries and cheap tequila, which Mr. Aliquo promised would now taste like top-shelf Patrón.

The miracle fruit, Synsepalum dulcificum, is native to West Africa and has been known to Westerners since the 18th century. The cause of the reaction is a protein called miraculin, which binds with the taste buds and acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids, according to a scientist who has studied the fruit, Linda Bartoshuk at the University of Florida’s Center for Smell and Taste. Dr. Bartoshuk said she did not know of any dangers associated with eating miracle fruit.

During the 1970s, a ruling by the Food and Drug Administration dashed hopes that an extract of miraculin could be sold as a sugar substitute. In the absence of any plausible commercial application, the miracle fruit has acquired a bit of a cult following.

Sina Najafi, editor in chief of the art magazine Cabinet, has featured miracle fruits at some of the publication’s events. At a party in London last October, the fruit, he said, “had people testifying like some baptismal thing.”

The berries were passed out last week at a reading of “The Fruit Hunters,” a new book by Adam Leith Gollner with a chapter about miracle fruit.

Bartenders have been experimenting with the fruit as well. Don Lee, a beverage director at the East Village bar Please Don’t Tell, has been making miracle fruit cocktails on his own time, but the bar probably won’t offer them anytime soon. The fruit is highly perishable and expensive — a single berry goes for $2 or more.

Lance J. Mayhew developed a series of drink recipes with miracle fruit foams and extracts for a recent issue of the cocktail magazine Imbibe and may create others for Beaker & Flask, a restaurant opening later this year in Portland, Ore.

He cautioned that not everyone enjoys the berry’s long-lasting effects. Despite warnings, he said, one woman became irate after drinking one of his cocktails. He said, “She was, like, ‘What did you do to my mouth?’ ”

Mr. Aliquo issues his own warnings. “It will make all wine taste like Manischewitz,” he said. And already sweet foods like candy can become cloying.

He said that he had learned about miracle fruit while searching ethnobotany Web sites for foods he could make for a diabetic friend.

The party last week was his sixth “flavor tripping” event. He hopes to put on a much larger, more expensive affair in June. Although he does sell the berries on his blog, www.flavortripping.wordpress.com, Mr. Aliquo maintains that he isn’t in it for the money. (He said he made about $100 on Friday.) Rather, he said, he does it to “turn on a bunch of people’s taste buds.”

He believes that the best way to encounter the fruit is in a group. “You need other people to benchmark the experience,” he said. At his first party, a small gathering at his apartment in January, guests murmured with delight as they tasted citrus wedges and goat cheese. Then things got trippy.

“You kept hearing ‘oh, oh, oh,’ ” he said, and then the guests became “literally like wild animals, tearing apart everything on the table.”

“It was like no holds barred in terms of what people would try to eat, so they opened my fridge and started downing Tabasco and maple syrup,” he said.

Many of the guests last week found the party through a posting at www.tThrillist.com. Mr. Aliquo sent invitations to a list of contacts he has been gathering since he and a friend began organizing StreetWars, a popular urban assassination game using water guns.

One woman wanted to see Mr. Aliquo eat a berry before she tried one. “What, you don’t trust me?” he said.

She replied, “Well, I just met you.”

Another guest said, “But you met him on the Internet, so it’s safe.”

The fruits are available by special order from specialty suppliers in New York, including Baldor Specialty Foods and S. Katzman Produce. Katzman sells the berries for about $2.50 a piece, and has been offering them to chefs.

Mr. Aliquo gets his miracle fruit from Curtis Mozie, 64, a Florida grower who sells thousands of the berries each year through his Web site, www.miraclefruitman.com. (A freezer pack of 30 berries costs about $90 with overnight shipping.) Mr. Mozie, who was in New York for Mr. Gollner’s reading, stopped by the flavor-tripping party.

Mr. Mozie listed his favorite miracle fruit pairings, which included green mangoes and raw aloe. “I like oysters with some lemon juice,” he said. “Usually you just swallow them, but I just chew like it was chewing gum.”

A large group of guests reached its own consensus: limes were candied, vinegar resembled apple juice, goat cheese tasted like cheesecake on the tongue and goat cheese on the throat. Bananas were just bananas.

For all the excitement it inspires, the miracle fruit does not make much of an impression on its own. It has a mildly sweet tang, with firm pulp surrounding an edible, but bitter, seed. Mr. Aliquo said it reminded him of a less flavorful cranberry. “It’s not something I’d just want to eat,” he said.

Busy Bee!

April 14, 2009 · 1 Comment

I haven’t forgotten about my blog, but have forgotten about what it feels like to have free time. :) I actually thrive when I’m so busy and prefer it that way but lately things have been especially very busy around our household.

2009 is already flying by. I think my last post was around New Year’s. It’s hard to believe we’re already into April. It’s been a month I have been dreading for quite awhile..

April 8, 2009 marked the 1 year anniversary of the loss of my baby Taylor. It was a very difficult day to get through. As we did on his birthday in November we made a donation to a homeless pets charity in his name. We talked about wonderful memories, looked through pictures, and shed some tears. One year later and the pain is still unbearable. I love him and miss him dearly.

Lots of updates for 2009 and I’m sure I’ll miss a few- In a nutshell, we’ve celebrated my husband’s birthday (January 22!), watched history unfold as the first African American President was sworn into office, took an impromptu and very fun and exciting trip to NYC in February. We took the city by storm, visited Chelsea Market, museums, shops, restaurants galore and saw Will Ferrell on Broadway!! On Valentine’s Day we saw Cirque du Soleil, and in March we celebrated 3 amazing years of marriage!! All the while my husband’s always hard at work at his job, his classes, and his ever so talented photography, and all the while I’ve managed to work two jobs and both have kept me busier than ever! I’ve still managed to set aside time for my cupcakes, cooking and my gardening and continue to gather the inspiration for my cookbook one day. :)

Work is busy and I have a good bit of responsibilities to fill my time.  And my events are picking up around the clock and I’ve been planning and managing weddings and bar mitzvahs galore every weekend I can! It’s a lot of hard work but it’s been nothing short of wonderful!! Each day I feel like I learn something valuable and get to know my staff better and better. It is a great feeling to see my hard work pay off as I am a big part of someone’s day and can witness new memories being created in their lives.

Spending time with our family and friends is always top on our list. We’ve had a handful of visitors so far this year also and it’s been nice to have a full house! We enjoy the company.

We finally completed the home office makeover (with the exception of needing 2 new office chairs). It was a lot of hard work but we are thrilled with how it turned out. It took some time to go through the book shelves and donate what we could, go through our closets and organize! We purchased our furniture collection at Pottery Barn. It is solid white oak and it really opens up the room. We both have our independent work spaces and everything is in order. I’ve managed to tackle the files and clean it all up, have a space for my card making supplies, wedding supplies/magazines, foodie clippings and cookbooks, and Chris has his own area for his lenses and other photography gear. We’re taking our time picking out art for the wall and still have a few of the small finishing touches to go but we’ve come a long way!

This weekend we were able to get out and work in the garden. I love the spring time and this month has been very bizarre in terms of weather. One minute it is flurrying, the next it is 75 degrees and the sun is shining and then this weekend the sirens were blaring and we were greeted by big hail and tornadoes in the area. Needless to say we were waiting until later in the month to get out and garden. We went to Lowe’s and had so much fun picking out beautiful flowers and plants and spent Sunday afternoon playing in the yard. I love taking care of the flowers and plants in the spring time and watering them each day. Some of our greens even came back from last spring and we’re happy to see them lush and growing again.

And things on the horizon seem busy as well. I have another wedding and bar mitzvah this weekend and Chris has class. And Amber’s wedding in Asheville is coming up in a few short weeks!

Hopefully I can find some time to post some updates and new pictures more regularly but wanted to check in and share our recent whereabouts and adventures. :)

Party Like It’s 2009

January 3, 2009 · 2 Comments

It’s hard to believe that 2009 is already knocking at our door. This year has been a whirlwind, full of both good times and bad, plenty of joys, heartache, pain and happiness combined. We’ve had some wins and losses and it’s time yet again to say goodbye to put another year in the record book and welcome a new year.

I got a fortune last week at the great Panda Express that I thought was fitting food for thought for the upcoming holiday and new year. “Counting Time Is Not So Important As Making Time Count.” I couldn’t agree more.

The fortune has been tucked in my jacket pocket all week and I wanted to write it down and share before I lost it. :)

As for the year in review, 2008 has been a year I will never forget. I still remember NYE of 2007 like it was last month! We went to Fuego- a Spanish tapas restaurant/bar in Midtown and enjoyed excellent food and a live band, and came home and shared champagne (too much!) and vegged out by the fireplace in our living room with our critter and watched the ball drop at midnight. It was a cozy way to start our new year, safe and warm at home.

2008 was filled with many ups and downs. This year my amazing husband and I celebrated 2 years of wonderful marriage together. I cannot believe how fast time has flown! This year I faced grief unlike any I could imagine. And 8 months later the wounds are still fresh. This year we did a lot of leisure traveling-NY, Chicago, TN, Caribbean Cruise, in addition to my work travels. This year, regardless of who each of us supported, our country made history when we elected the first African American president. This year I started not one but two new jobs in October and November and have been extremely busy as a result.  This year we hosted our first Thanksgiving in our home. And this year we learned even more about ourselves and each other with each passing day.

So the time has come to make a few resolutions, or goals if you will, to start the new year off right. I think it’s important for these goals to be quantifiable. Instead of saying “do this better” or “do this more” I’d like to emphasize the “how” so that I can better measure these accomplishments. My goals encompass family, friends, household and fitness priorities and I’m already eager to get to work.

This has been a difficult year for many people across the globe to keep their jobs, make ends meet, deal with the rising cost of gas and food. The unemployment rate is at an all time high, plants and factories closing across the country, mall businesses failing, and corporations collapsing.  There are people out there who work hard but cannot afford to buy toys for their kids or gas to put in their car to go to work. There are people out there who need medical attention but are unable to go to the doctor. It’s very basic things that we don’t think about that are considered privileges instead of basic rights.

We have been very fortunate and blessed that we have not been directly impacted but it has made us aware of how others have and how we should not take anything for granted.

We have been very grateful for each day. I have a wonderful family, terrific friends, a roof over my head, warm food on the table and a soft place to fall. Each year is filled with so many new lessons, trials and tribulations, tears of joy and tears of sadness and many wonderful memories.

Here’s to a promising year. I’m looking forward to 2009 and the adventures it has in store!!

O Christmas Tree

December 24, 2008 · 5 Comments

The past few months have been even more hectic than usual which means it’s been pretty nutty but I still wanted to find a few minutes to write a new post and share some holiday pics. As busy as things have been I actually find that taking a few minutes to babble about nothing usually helps to slow me down for a minute and it sort of feels like a diary at times. So today’s post is about our Christmas tree.

Last year we moved into our new house the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. It was very hectic moving during the holidays. With boxes to unpack and things to settle we hardly had time (or space!) to think about a tree last year. But we were determined to put one up. During our entire house hunt I would stop and picture where a tree would be put in the living room so we felt it was essential.  I just love how it smells and love snuggling by the lights at night so we still put up a tree last year 1 week before Christmas. We went to a spot near our place in Perimeter and picked out the cutest Charlie Brown Christmas tree you have ever seen. We still wanted to give him a home.

This year we wanted to get our tree a little earlier so we went a few days after Thanksgiving. We went to a place in downtown Alpharetta and picked out a tree that’s perfect for us. Not too big, not too small, but just right.

We had so much fun gathering all the holiday decoration boxes from the attic and decorating our tree. It was especially hard for me this year missing my little guy but I am very lucky to have so many wonderful memories of the holidays to help get through it. These next two pictures are of my very favorite ornaments on our tree. I got these made for Chris the first Christmas after we got married. The first one is of the three of us and is our happy family , each with our names and little jingle bells dangling from our house. The second one is a Happily Ever After ornament with two kissing moose with our wedding date on it.   :)

This picture below is one Chris took of our Christmas lights with his new macro lens. It’s a neat technique that allows the lights to come forward in distinct shapes with a blurred background. This lens is the coolest thing and the pictures my talented hubby is able to take with it are simply amazing. We are working on getting some of his photography (I’ve commissioned him to take pictures of flowers) on a large canvas to put in our house. 1  year later and we’re slowly hanging things on the walls! It takes so long to find something we like I now decided I’m going to make him take the pictures I’ve been looking for. :)

We’ve had fun decorating and hanging our stockings and baking lots of Christmas yummies this year. We also went to see the Magical Night of Lights display at Lake Lanier. It was a lot of fun. We drove through and saw the displays and at the end in the freezing cold ventured out around the Christmas village/market for awhile (and by awhile I mean few minutes… I did better in the car. It was cold). :)

I can’t believe 2009 is right around the corner and it’s resolution time again! (Didn’t quite stick to the birthday resolutions…so I’m jumping in to do it at New Year’s). :)

Our First Thanksgiving (as hosts!)

December 12, 2008 · 3 Comments

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

This year we decided to host both families at our house for Thanksgiving. It turned out great! We all had a lot of fun and had enough food to feed a family of 15 twice! It was so nice for all of us to be under one roof and to not have to worry about driving back and forth and eating two meals back to back..so instead I just ate two meals worth in one sitting… ;)

My parents, my sister and Chris’ mom each offered to chip in and bring a dish to contribute to the table which was wonderful and very helpful!! Chris and I took care of the rest of the spread and when it all came together we truly had a feast!  We also made sure to have a constant drip of wine flowing throughout the weekend!

The menu actually turned out to be a Food Network Thanksgiving with recipes from Paula Deen, Giada, Alton Brown, and Emeril all represented at the table….are you surprised?? ;)

THE MENU:

Green Bean Casserole (Mom)

Sweet Potatoes with Brown Sugar and Pecans (Mom)

Spinach and Wild Rice Casserole (Sis)

Steamed Carrots (Sis)

Paula Deen’s Cheese Biscuits (Sis)

Cranberry Salad (Dena)

Orange and Cranberry Muffins with Cream Cheese Frosting (Dena)

The amazing TURKEY with rosemary, sage, ginger, cinnamon and basil (my hubby!)

Cornbread Panzanella Salad (me and Chris)

Spinach and Artichoke Stuffing with Brie (me and Chris)

Pecan Coffee Cake (me and Chris)

Gingerbread Pumpkin Trifle (me and Chris)

Chris and I stayed up until the wee hours on Wednesday night prepping, cooking and cleaning! It was so much fun and we think we may have used every dish in the house. And I must say Chris’ turkey was worth all the hard work (he) put into it!!! He really impressed me and worked so hard and it was so moist and flavorful and was a hit! He even got this new little gadget (there are more cords and wires and random tech gadgets in our house than I can shake a stick at..so he decided to confuse me some more. ;) ) It’s a thermometer that inserts itself into the food and has a wire with a sensor and a temperature gauge that sits outside of oven resting on the counter while in the turkey. That way you don’t have to keep opening up the oven to check the temp on the turkey and lose precious heat and up the cooking time and you are able to read out the temperature from outside the oven! Pretty neat huh? I was impressed. Alton Brown’s used one on his show before and we were fans of the idea.

We cooked together, cleaned together, talk, ate, walked, laughed, and lazed around watching the parade and football. We played the Wii, watched trash TV, and went to see Four Christmases (the new movie with Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon— hilarious!) at night. All in all, it was a wonderful and relaxing holiday and we are thankful for so many things. We are very blessed with a wonderful family and are happy we were able to share the holiday together!

I was definitely missing a certain someone this holiday which was tough but I felt so lucky to be surrounded by the people I love. We are very blessed and thankful to have a roof over our head and warm food on the table each night, a family who loves us and wonderful friends.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and did their fair share of eating too. :)

Here are some pictures below!

Happy Birthday my little Taylor

November 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

Friday, November 21 was Taylor’s birthday. It was the first birthday he wasn’t physically here for me to hold him and kiss him and shower him with treats and presents, toys and blankets. I really miss him more than anything so it was an especially tough day to get through.

As tradition would have it, Chris and I still went to PetSmart (our Dunwoody PetSmart) to buy a little something for my little guy or something to remind me of how wonderful his birthday is. We bought an ornament for our Christmas tree that’s a little red dog house that says “My Best Friend” on the top and there is a place to put a little picture of him. :) We already have another ornament of the three of us that I had custom made 2 years ago that has “The Jupins” on the top of this little house and then a dangly ornament for each of us, me, Chris, and Taylor. Decorating our tree this year is going to be very difficult when I get to these ornaments but it will make me feel good at the same time to know he’s still with us and will always be a part of our family.

Also for his birthday (and we are going to do this each year), we donated money to The Dog House Rescue & Adoption organization in Taylor’s memory. I think he would have liked to take care of other little puppies or kitties who didn’t have a loving home like he did.

The Dog House Rescue and Adoption was started in 1998 as a Private Foster program for sick, injured, and abused dogs and cats. :( Most of the animals they assist are facing euthanasia at local county shelters, or are the byproduct of a criminal cruelty case. The focus of the organization is to provide loving care in a private home while the search continues for a safe and permanent loving home. They are not breed specific and usually have a random mix available for adoption. Their work is funded soley through private donations so the success is dependent on generosity, love and donations to make all things possible for these critters.

If anyone else is interested in making a donation (for yourself, your critter, or on behalf of my little Taylor) you can do so at www.atlantadoghouse.com OR pick any charity of your choice. We also love Homeless Pets Foundation (PetSmart locations) and have volunteered with them in the past as well.  Or if you can’t donate any money, donate time to volunteer at any of these shelters, or just be aware that there are some animals out there that aren’t as lucky and need good homes or all the help they can get.

I feel such a huge void in my heart without Taylor. Though I am overwhelmed with grief I am very thankful and grateful for the 13 years and 5 months he gave to me in this world as my best friend and companion. I love him and miss him very much and know that for this birthday he enjoyed a big piece of bread and a doggie cookie and is watching over us always. :)

A Hop, Skip, and Two Weeks Since I’ve Last Written

November 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

I know I haven’t written lately but I’ve been a busy busy bee! Since it’s been a couple weeks I thought I’d write a quick post before I get dinner going and while I’m waiting for my hubby to get home!

The Past Two Weeks-ish in the Jupin household..

1. Had last day at my job at Liberty. It was definitely strange to leave but I am looking forward to new chapters. The gals took me to lunch to say goodbye and everyone was so great. And Chris and I went out to celebrate that Friday night and we went to dinner (hello Bahama-ritas!)

2. Saw the movie “Role Models” three words: hil-ar-ious!

3. Shopped for my Thanksgiving table top accessories and linens at C&B.

4.  Enjoyed a peppermint latte and pumpkin bread at Starbucks- I love seasonal yummies!

5.  Visited the grandparents in Tennessee for a weekend (more to come about our visit because I feel it’s blogworthy)

6.  Had a week off in between jobs. I somehow managed to make it very hectic and busy but I got a lot done!

Got my routine car maintenance done since it never seems like a good time to drop it off and be car-less for an afternoon, cleaned like a mad woman!, caught up on laundry, shopped, watched 2 girly movies that I knew I couldn’t convince Chris to watch (he usually gives in but I even knew these would be lame– Over Her Dead Body and Made of Honor. Both *totally* predictable and kinda lame but good chick flicks), worked weddings!! (I really need to write about some of these- it has been so exciting! And there was a hawk/dove experience but I’ll get into that later..), cooked, baked, and ran errands galore!

7.  I took the opportunity to work in my “test kitchen” (c/o Bobby Flay) to practice some Thanksgiving yummies for our family get together at our place and dinner with friends.

Test kitchen: sweet potato gnocchi, cornbread salad (that’s right) and very moist yummy pecan bread

For kicks: banana pudding, homemade marinara, orzo with basil and fresh veggies, enchilladas, and sour cream coffee cake

8. Saw the new James Bond movie with Chris (he bribed me with dinner)

9.  Went to another neighborhood bonfire

10. Tapas and drinks with Mitch and Durand and still feeling guilty about all the cheesecake..

Well there you have it! :) And I started my new job on Monday so it’s been a pretty busy week! Hopefully I’ll be better about writing again soon!

Rock the Vote

October 31, 2008 · 3 Comments

Election '06 by moria

By NO means am I trying to take a political stand here. I want to keep things light and airy. :) But I admit I have been following this election closely and am excited to see which new direction our country will soon take.  For once, I felt I was going to the polls to vote FOR someone rather than against the other person. And it’s refreshing to feel inspired. So I simply thought it’d be appropriate to write a post about the upcoming election and how each and every one of us should make it a point to vote for their candidate of choice, regardless of who that may be.

I can’t believe it’s already election time again. The reason I say that is because 4 years ago in November I had recently started my new job and was sent to NY for a week for training. Chris went with me and roamed the city’s streets during the day and we enjoyed the evenings together also. It was a really fun trip and I remember it being very cold! We were actually there on election night 2004. In the evening we took a subway from our hotel and ventured to Rockefeller Plaza where all the action was taking place. It was amazing to see all the flags waving, all the news cameras filming, and all the people crowded in to watch the polls as they came in on the huge screens in Times Square.

NY is a very patriotic city. It was such a great place to be during the election because we felt like we had a front row view of the news as it became news. We were even on CNN for a brief moment or two as the news cameras panned to the crowd who looked on (yes we were THOSE people waving like idiots..)

It felt like a year of a lot of changes, and not just because of the election. We had graduated from college in May 2004 and moved from Athens to Atlanta. Though only an hour apart, there were a world of differences. We both began new jobs and were working full time and were pretending to be grown-ups when we felt (and still feel) like kids at heart.

It’s hard to believe that 4 years have already gone by since the last election and now here we are again. Ironically, it was this same time of year 4 years ago that I started my job and next Friday will be my last day. It seems not only will I be starting a new chapter of my life but it’s a new chapter on a broader scale too.  (Post to come soon about my new job(s)!!!!)

Friends can have friends who are liberal, conservative, independent, Republican, Democrat, white, black, brown, purple, orange, green, tall, fat, short, skinny, etc. I value each of these viewpoints and backgrounds and respect them all. And I feel that it is these differences amongst one another that makes life interesting.

Everyone has their own choice to make-it just matters on whose viewpoints more closely identify with your own. Looking at the big picture, we all want to see improvements for the years to come for the economy, and want to create an environment that is beneficial for each one of us and for our grandkids and great grandkids someday. That stands true for everyone no matter what button-red or blue- you might wear.

I feel an educated vote is VERY important. An uneducated vote is worse than no vote at all. Therefore, I wanted to post these links that provide information on each candidate’s National Platforms.

These are actual platforms from legitimate websites that DO NOT lean one way or the other. It is simply meant to highlight their positions on the big ticket items this election.

Today is also the LAST day of advance voting. (And it’s Halloween! Boo! Happy Halloween!!!!! :)   Which also means traffic later will suck.  Of course you can still go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4 but be ready for long lines! We already voted early last week and the lines were already wrapping around the corner. We considered ourselves lucky to have only waited 1  1/2 hours (in the freezing cold..with numb fingers and toes mind you) but we were excited to vote and wanted to exercise our right and take the opportunity to participate in this exciting election!

In summary, VOTE! And whether led by Democrats or Republicans, I think each one of us would like to see a positive, bright future ahead!!

Weekend Update

October 20, 2008 · 2 Comments

It’s been a relaxing Sunday so I decided this evening would be the perfect time to catch up on my blog.

The weekends always seem to go by way too fast. This was probably the first week in I don’t even know how long that we didn’t have a set schedule or plans to go by. It was kind of nice just going wherever the wind blew us.

It was a gray and rainy day all day on Friday. If I could have worn my pjs to work and brought my fleece UGA blanket along I would have! Friday evening, we decided to go grab a bite to eat and unwind from the work week. We were both craving warm, comfort foods to suit our mood for the weather so we went to an Italian restaurant and sat by the fireplace and enjoyed a yummy dinner. We ordered a slice of to-die-for pumpkin cheesecake and came home and had a cup of coffee and vegged out in front of the TV, turned on the fireplace and listened to the rain.

On Saturday we were having some work done around the house so I decided what better way to spend the beautiful fall afternoon but to open up all the windows and let the fresh air in and bake, bake, bake!!

I have a thing for aprons and kitchen towels too actually. I have plenty but loove to collect them for some reason.  I am convinced that each apron goes with a certain type of cuisine or mood. My hubby bought me this apron the other day from Paper Affair- one of my all time favorite stores!  This one says ‘baking’ to me so baking is what I did.  I made far too many Halloween cupcakes so then spent part of the afternoon delivering to the neighbors. :)

I was in an especially festive mood- as I’ve mentioned before I love Halloween! I made cupcakes with witch hats! I went with vanilla flavoring for the cupcakes. My frosting was a buttercream and cream cheese frosting, with coloring to make them slightly orange. I used dark chocolate cookies and trimmed them for hats and made the top of the pointy hats with milk chocolate hershey kisses! They were so fun to make and so delicious if I do say so myself. I knew I had to share with our friends or I’d make short work out of them!

Saturday evening we decided to venture out and do some house-y shopping. Afterwards, we headed over to Atlantic Station. I love going to Atlantic Station in the fall. It was definitely sweata weatha! We wandered around the shops and the markets all bundled up. We grabbed delicious hot thai food and wandered around some more happily full before heading back home in time to watch SNL.

When cooking/baking is your favorite hobby, one must always find time to go to the gym. This morning it was time to show LA Fitness some love! I sometimes wish working out was like a montage in the movies– a song is playing and shows the person really moving on a treadmill and then lifting weights and poof- by the end of the song the person is in phenomenal shape! :)

After heading home and getting cleaned up, we grabbed lunch at a really great BBQ place near the house. Chris had been craving BBQ for awhile so we decided to try a new place we pass by all the time. The food was delicious and they have live music on Sundays. We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed the gorgeous weather.

Afterwards, we were off to one of our most favorite places…. the farmer’s market! I swear it’s like Disneyland to me and I could wander around for hours….

Needless to say- we did not come home empty handed. We found some wonderful freshly baked parmesan bread, fresh marinara sauce, quirky pasta noodles, orange muffins, lychee, sesame sticks, globe grapes (seriously these are huge), garlic flatbread, peanut butter toffee, and creamy havarti with dill. I also stocked up on a variety of spices and found the sweetest smelling fresh lavender that I plan to use to make calming sleeping eye masks!

We then meandered over to the fresh fruits/veggies section. It was chaos fighting the shopping carts galore but we threw some elbows so we were able to sample some of the wonderful foods! We sampled fresh coconut, pineapple, and even yucca root- which once steamed for approximately 30 minutes tastes surprisingly like a sweet potato. We took our time breezing down each aisle and finding new and exciting ingredients to take home to experiment with.

We gazed at the wine selection (doh- Sunday!), sampled the many cheeses, smelled the fresh breads, drooled over the desserts and picked out bundles of fresh flowers to bring home to light up our room. I chose deep purple snapdragons, and vivid heliconias among others to make a tall arrangement for our dining table. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Dinner included a variety of the goodies we picked up from the market. At night I finally found time to watch Real Simple Real Life- which is a new show on TLC that I tivo’d from the other night. Real Simple is one of my favorite magazines and now they have a show! The premise of the show is ordinary people with stressful/cluttered lives are visited by the Real Simple team and are taught the magical ways of organization, simple cleaning and cooking tips, and so much more! This show is right up my alley! I swear when they showed the disaster that was this family’s garage I almost passed out.

And that’s my weekend update. :)
